Anabil Sengupta অনাবিল সেনগুপ্ত

Anabil Sengupta (Bengali: অনাবিল সেনগুপ্ত) is an Indian civil engineer, Bengali-language science writer and rationalist activist based in Purba Bardhaman district, West Bengal.^[1] He publishes on his own website, anabilsengupta.com, under the content brand Exposed Emotions.^[1]

His essays and letters, written in Bengali, deal with rationalism and superstition, snakebite and public health, religious fundamentalism in education, communalism, air pollution alongside the COVID-19 pandemic, and the political economy of privatisation. They have appeared in Bengali newspapers and periodicals in India and Bangladesh between 2017 and 2021.^[6][15][21]

Press reports published in 2011 and in 2017 describe him as an office-holder of the Burdwan unit of the Bharatiya Bigyan O Yuktibadi Samiti (the Science and Rationalists' Association of India), though the two reports differ on the designation.^[2][3] He also runs a Bengali-language YouTube channel, অচেতন (Ocheton).^[25]

২০১১ ও ২০১৭ সালের দুটি সংবাদ প্রতিবেদনে তাঁকে ভারতীয় বিজ্ঞান ও যুক্তিবাদী সমিতির বর্ধমান শাখার পদাধিকারী হিসেবে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে, তবে দুটি প্রতিবেদনে উল্লিখিত পদের নাম এক নয়।^[২][৩] এছাড়া তিনি অচেতন (Ocheton) নামে একটি বাংলা ইউটিউব চ্যানেল চালান।^[২৫]

Sengupta describes himself as a civil engineer who has worked for more than twenty years in public infrastructure and in school development, and as a writer and science communicator.^[1] This employment is stated by him and is not independently documented on this page; engineering staff below senior gazetted rank do not appear in published rosters.^[31]

Alongside that work he has contributed essays and letters to Bengali newspapers and magazines published in India and in Bangladesh.^[16][19] His stated home locality, given in the address lines printed under two of his signed newspaper pieces, is Chhotonilpur, Bardhaman.^[16][22]

Sengupta has been associated with the Bharatiya Bigyan O Yuktibadi Samiti (the Science and Rationalists' Association of India), the organisation founded by the rationalist campaigner Prabir Ghosh, who died on 7 April 2023.^[2][4][5]

The designation attributed to him differs between the two press reports that name him. A report in The Statesman of 3 December 2011, on beliefs surrounding snakes and snakebite in the Burdwan area, quoted him as "president of the Burdwan unit" of the Samiti.^[2] A report in the Bengali daily Sangbad Pratidin of 12 April 2017, on a suicide locally attributed to a belief in ghosts, described him instead as secretary of the Burdwan branch.^[3] The two accounts, published six years apart, are not consistent with each other. This page therefore records both descriptions and does not assert a particular title.

Subjects on which he has campaigned and written in this connection include beliefs surrounding snakes and snakebite, deaths attributed to treatment by ওঝা (traditional healers) rather than by medicine, and cases in which fear of ghosts was locally cited as a cause of death.^{[2][3][22][24]}

The Bengali digital magazine Littlemag Unedited (littlemag.org) has carried at least six essays under his byline between December 2017 and August 2021, on subjects including belief and scientific method, the toppling of statues as an ideological dispute, communalism, the Bengali new year as a secular festival, the overlap of air pollution with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the platinum jubilee of Indian independence. All six remain publicly readable at their original addresses.^{[6][7][8][9][10][11]}

His essays and letters have also appeared in the Bengali print press, with dated clippings held for each item: in Ekdin on 9 March 2018, 23 March 2018, 21 December 2018 and 24 December 2018;^{[12][13][14][15]} in Aajkaal on 19 April 2018;^[16] in Puber Kalam on 24 August 2020;^[17] and on the editorial page of Uttarbanga Sambad on 31 August 2020.^[18] Two pieces appeared in the Bangladeshi publication Shampratik Deshkal, in its print edition of 3 January 2019 and its web edition of 11 August 2020.^[19][20] An essay on the joint epidemic of Covid and air pollution appeared in Gyan O Bigyan, the magazine of the Bangiya Bigyan Parishad, in Year 74 No. 2, dated 10 February 2021, at page 60 (ISSN 2454-7727).^[21]

Three further appearances are documented by clippings on which the date is not legible: a signed letter in the সম্পাদক সমীপেষু column of Anandabazar Patrika;^[22] a signed article in Ganashakti;^[23] and a signed column in Ei Samay.^[24] These are listed with the publication named and the date left open rather than estimated.

Several of these titles overlap: the same argument was placed in more than one outlet, in the same or a closely related form, rather than each item being an independent work.^[31]

Sengupta publishes a Bengali-language YouTube channel named অচেতন (Ocheton), under the handle @anabil-sengupta; its channel identifier is UCnL59DzebUnVGzbiPBptS-A.^[25]

The channel's own description states that it carries Bengali original songs, satire, folk fusion, poetry and social-awareness content, and that its purpose is to question blind faith and superstition and to encourage rational thinking through music, humour and storytelling.^[25] The channel therefore extends in an audio-visual form the same subject matter that his printed essays address.

Subscriber and video counts are not reproduced on this page. Platform metrics change continuously, and the figures available are self-reported rather than independently sampled; an undated number would age badly.^[31]

All four are published by the author. They are compiled from essays that had already appeared elsewhere, and they are listed here as primary sources: they document what he has written, and are not independent commentary on it.

In July 2020 Sengupta received the শব্দের জাদুকর সম্মাননা ("Shabder Jadukar", Magician of Words) citation, conferred by the "Akash" cultural circle of the magazine Tuli Kalam, published from the Charuchandra Art Centre at Gangulipara, Agarpara, Kolkata. The citation carries his photograph and is signed by the magazine's editor.^[26]

This is a local cultural citation from a small literary circle. It is recorded here because the document itself is dated and held, not because it carries wider standing.

He also placed third in a flash-fiction (অনুগল্প) competition run by Banglalive.com; the result is documented by the site's own announcement and by an editorial e-mail, neither of which carries a legible date.^[31]

২০২০ সালের জুলাই মাসে কলকাতার আগরপাড়ার গাঙ্গুলিপাড়ায় চারুচন্দ্র আর্ট সেন্টার থেকে প্রকাশিত তুলি কলম পত্রিকার "আকাশ" সাংস্কৃতিক আড্ডা তাঁকে "শব্দের জাদুকর সম্মাননা" প্রদান করে। সম্মাননাপত্রে তাঁর ছবি রয়েছে এবং পত্রিকার সম্পাদকের স্বাক্ষর আছে।^[২৬]

The sources behind this page are sorted into three classes rather than presented as a single undifferentiated list, so that a reader can see exactly how much weight each claim carries. The first class can be checked immediately by anyone, from a public address. The second is documented by a dated clipping or e-paper screenshot held in the subject's own files: the masthead, the date strip and the printed byline are visible on the image, but the item has not been retrieved independently from the publisher's archive, and a reader wishing to confirm it should consult the named publication for the stated date. The third is stated by the subject and is not independently confirmable. That third class is not a doubt cast on the claims: much regional Bengali print journalism is never digitised at all, and e-paper deep links are built to expire, so a missing working URL is a fact about the publishing platform rather than about whether the item appeared.^[31]
